Recent Catches At Hay Creek

It’s been quite windy and cold lately so I have lacked the motivation to hit the creeks for some trout. Even with the snow this morning, the weather made for some decent fishing conditions, so I headed out to the creek down the road. The first few holes of the day were covered in ice, so I moved a few miles upstream and got into some beautiful brown trout. Tomorrow I’ll be headed up into the mountains to target a different species of trout and hopefully the creek won’t be covered in ice.

The weather was too nice to pass up on some fishing today, so I went out to the creek down the road to target some trout. I landed three gorgeous browns and two of them must’ve had some stories. The biggest one of the day had an injury on the top of his head, leading half of it to be colored black. At first I thought it was a melanistic fish but I see this coloration with injuries all the time. The final and smallest fish of the day was a stocked brown that had a pre tied leader hanging out of his mouth. The hook was completely swallowed so I cut the line as deep as I could and sent him back on his way.

Who says winter isn’t for fishing?! While it isn’t as cold here as it was in New York before I left for break, the fishing seems to be significantly slower. I found some success last week with a nice 18” brown trout, but since then, I’ve had two unsuccessful trips to the nearby spillway. Today, I found myself with an hour of daylight left wanting to catch some fish, so I drove five minutes down the road to a frequently productive stretch of creek. Within the first few casts I landed an extremely pretty wild brown. I think the cows were jealous of my catch. However, this was my only fish of the day. I ran into an old friend today too, a palomino I had stumbled upon about five months ago still occupying the same section of creek. Like he did over the summer, he followed my lure numerous times without committing.

Fished for a while in Hay Creek and landed 5 species. One was a sucker that seemed to have went after the crank bait surprisingly.

Caught some great fish this afternoon, including a near 17 inch Brown Trout that bit on a roadrunner. Caught two other browns as well as a small fallfish. Surprisingly hooked an even bigger brown, that unfortunately spit the hook after about 3 seconds.

Fished Hay Creek for a bit and landed 4 different species, Brown Trout, Largemouth, Fallfish, and Shiner. Got most of them on a Panther Martin.

The trout were biting today but so were the chubs. Caught a rainbow, two browns, and about 3 dozen fallfish. Got all of them on a little Panther Martin rooster tail. #Catch22

Did a bit of afternoon trout fishing after a storm and landed a little brown. Got it on a 1/10 ounce jigging spoon.
