Yesterday evening I wanted to head out to fish for some lake trout, but first, I had some unfinished business. A few days ago I missed a musky twice on my swimbait by pulling the hook right out of his mouth after he bit. I decided to head back to the same spot where I saw him in hopes of landing him. I made my rounds with the swimbait to no avail, so I switched to the chatterbait, a bait that has yet to fail me this fall and has landed 11 musky since September. It took one hour to coax this fish into biting, and I successfully brought him to shore. I am unsure if it was the same fish I encountered a few days prior, but it was definitely in the same spot. After this successful mission, I crossed into Vermont to fish for some lake trout and only came away with some yellow perch.

Had some time after class to fish off of the kayak in hopes of catching another musky today. Luck was on my side again and I managed to land this beautiful muskellunge. Hopefully I can get out and target them one last time before laker season, but man my toes were cold after this one.

Enjoyed the 32-degree morning out on the kayak! Casted around the chatterbait and swimbait for about 6 hours today and had great success. The first fish of the day but a chatterbait and came in around 33 inches. This fish was incredibly fat and full of energy. The next bite came on a 6” whale, but unfortunately I pulled the hooks out of his mouth. I would go on to do the same thing five minutes later on a smaller fish in the same spot. About a half mile from my take out spot, I found myself throwing the chatterbait once again in a very deep hole. Just before it reached the boat, it got hit by a gorgeous muskellunge with some neat looking patterns. Safe to say he swam off very gently…

After nearly a three week stretch without picking up a rod, I finally made it to the river this afternoon to target the elusive muskellunge. It took about three hours of casting before I hooked into the first fish of the day, a muskellunge that I estimate to be between 27-29 inches long. The second came soon after, a fish that could have been my smallest musky ever. These were Muskies 8 and 9 this fall, which I never thought would have been possible. I guess I’ve put in 90,000 casts this fall!
