Balsam Lake

3lb smallie on a crankbait. Biggest of the year.

First time on a powered boat! Went up to Balsam with a big party and tossed some lures. Didn't really expect much and caught a few perch and a maybe 2lb largie who gave up immediately after getting hooked lol Buddy on the boat nailed a solid smallie and up came a second one, chasing. I grabbed a second rod with a texas-rigged senko, dropped it down and immediately hooked that one! It was directly under the boat and I didn't get a good set so it came off after a couple of jumps. After landing, I got a real bad headache so didn't join for another trip out. While I was on the dock throwing flies at giant sunfish, I spotted a nice smallie swim past. Excited, I casted my fly in front of him, gave it a few strips and he took it! The fight was intense as he went straight for under the dock, and got between the supports. My net was off the dock and someone had to grab it for me as I struggled with the fish. He came out just under 3lbs. Smallie fishing on the fly just might be my new favourite thing. #catchking
