Recent Catches At Octoraro Lake

Yesterday I headed out to the Susquehanna in hopes of getting on a school of stripers. I found said school of stripers, but before I could cast at them, I was yelled at with a megaphone from a half mile across the river. Apparently I wasn’t able to walk in the water in a small section of river, even though the only sign in the area specified “no boats beyond this point”. I was told to move down river where I found a few smallmouth on my spook and no stripers. Still, I headed to a spot I had some confidence in catching a snakehead and threw out some live minnows. It took a while but I finally had a taker and landed this little snakehead.

Another epic frogging session today on the kayak! This time I decided to downsize my frog since I was missing so many snakehead last time. It kinda worked in the fact that it got way more bites, but I still whiffed numerous snakeheads. After about two and a half hours I managed to land this beautiful snakehead that bit three times before he fully engulfed it. The bass were extremely aggressive today and I caught about six with the biggest coming in at three pounds. Since this frog was so small, I was throwing it on my medium light rod, so it made the fights way more intense.

This little snakehead makes number 10 for me all time, and he was by far the smallest one I’ve caught. I threw a frog around today for about four hours and I had countless snakehead bites, well over a dozen. However, I’m pretty sure they were all pretty small and were either inaccurate or their mouths were too small to inhale the frog. This little guy bit just minutes before I had to head back to the car so it looks like I won’t be going hungry tonight! As well as landing this snakehead, I caught four other largemouth that fooled me into thinking they were my desired species. Still, they put up some serious fights and the blow ups were insane! #catchking

Took the kayak out after work to do some snakehead frogging. I managed to land one gorgeous one right at the end of my session. It took about 9 bites to finally get one to the boat. Right off the bat I hooked a really nice largemouth on my swimbait that jumped a few times and spat the hook. I think about 5 out of the 9 frog bites were snakehead and the rest largemouth. Gifted this invasive guy to a family out on their boat. #catchking

Got skunked fishing for catfish at the spillway. Last cast on the causeway got me a bluegill!

I’ve gotten out plenty over the past week but haven’t gotten anything too spectacular. Two somewhat successful catfish sessions and some trout and bass action. Tons of species though, these are just a few of them and the highlights of my recent trips. Today’s fish included a nice largemouth and some trout, and I had an encounter with a very large palomino. I estimate that it was at least 18 inches and would qualify for a personal best. This fish legitimately followed me in every single cast for a solid 20 minutes. I eventually gave up and determined that I would come back another day in hopes of more aggression.

Caught a weird slimy creature today. This is only my third ever eel and he ate my nightcrawler off the bottom. I got a baby channel kitty on the worms as well. No snakeheads this time but another fisherman at the dam got one. The weather was absolutely brutal today.

Today I had the pleasure of crossing paths with my beloved invasive dragon fish! Caught one little one on the swimbait, a channel catfish, and a bunch of shad that are going to be used for bait tonight. It was well worth the 4:30 wake up!
