Northern stargazer

Another one of these ugly things... Angler next to me asked if he could keep it, so i gave it to him. He said these things are delicious, apparently.

New species unlocked. I heard these things can give their handlers a bit of shock. Didn't care to find out.

Northern Stargazer caught from the surf. Low tide. Ocean City NJ. Next to the 5th Street jetty. 1/4 oz jig head on a fish finder rig, Berkley Gulp! Saltwater Jerk Shad (nuclear chicken).

Can anyone help me identify what type of fish this is? I released it but had never seen anything like it before in the Great South Bay. It had wing-like pectoral fins and dorsal spines like a sea robin, coloring similar to a summer flounder (thought it was a fluke when it was surfacing but it didn’t fight like one). Could not ID, maybe in the grouper family? (Update: I believe this is a Northern Stargazer now thanks to this app’s fish database)
