My original plan was to hike to Smith Lake to fish there, but a couple of my kids decided to hike Greys Peak, so I decided to join them for the summit attempt before doing a bit of fishing at Angel Lake. There is no trail after the first half mile, and the off-trail scrambling was legit. While melting fast, there is still a lot of snow up there and the run-off cascades down the face of the mountain in a fan-like array. Because this 10,650ft peak rises up from the Nevada desert, the views are incredible, even rivaling fourteeners in terms of sheer panorama. We did some good glissading on the way down. Took a plunge in the ice-melt waters of Angel lake and caught a rainbow trout too. Pic #9 shows Smith Lake on the left and Angel Lake on the right, taken from the summit.
