Another catch from the recent adventure. The pikes loved the chatterbait with the deputy trailer.

The first light had barely crept over the horizon when we pulled into the lot just outside the conservation area. The tandem kayak lay in pieces, waiting. Gear check was fast but ritualistic—trolling motor, life vests, rudder, pedal drive, rods, reels, lures. Everything in its place. And then we were off, gliding past lily pads and around quiet points, chasing the day before it had even begun. The narrow gap between two ponds looked like nothing more than a slit in the cattails, but it opened into an adventure. We pushed through, paddling hard, weaving between tall grass, reeds scratching our shoulders. Out of the weeds came a pond as calm as glass, alive with movement. Bluegill flickered. Bass lingered at the edges. Crappie flashed silver. Somewhere in the shadows, pike waited. We worked the banks methodically—Senkos, buzzbaits, jigs, wake baits. Cast, retrieve, repeat. The pond gave up its treasures slow but steady: two northern pike for me, two bass for Beika Zhan. By the time we pulled back, sun climbing high, it wasn’t just about the tally on the board. It was the journey through grass and cattails, the hidden water alive with fish, and a day on the water shared with good company. The kind of trip you don’t measure in numbers, but in memory. My first catch from the yak! 🔥
